2009 National Youth Self Portrait Prize- Jet James

My entry ' Disposable Self' has been short listed to 32 works and will be included into the National Portrait Gallery online exhibition for the National Youth Self Portrait Prize. The website will be launched on Thursday July 23 and can be viewed at www.portrait.gov.au/site/nyspp.php from that date.

"This year the prize has been highly competitive with over 300 artworks submitted. All entries have been of the highest standard and have displayed an impressive variety of media and techniques. A short list of 15 final works were selected for the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery".

I was unlucky to make it to the final 15. Though its a great surprise to have the image that I entered achieve a shortlisting, Its a very big honour. Wish me luck for next year :)

Finalist of the Central Queensland Vocational Student of the Year- 2009 Queensland Training Awards- Jet James Blurton

The Central Queensland regional training awards is approaching . With over 640 nominations in total, the quality of nominations received were extremely high which has highlighted Jet's achievement in reaching the finals. Jet is amongst 3 finalists selected for the Central Queensland region. The winner will be notified at the Mackay presentation ceremony and progress to the statewide award........

I started by drawing my figure into a plastic surface. I them embossed the surface with a variety of foliage. I collaged paint, mesh tape, sand paper, and lacquer to the surface. Because the plastic is soft, ( much like lino) I was able to carve into the plastic as well. I then inked this surface of materials and laid a moist sheet paper on top. A traditional printing press pushes the plate and paper together and creates a limited edition print. As seen above.

The art of collography was invented during the early part of the 20th century. This revolutionary technique involved a rigid surface collaged with materials which is inked with pigment and used to print onto paper or another material using a printing press.

"Free Spirit" : Here I used a foam board and etched into it with screws, toy cars, knifes, paint lids, and other bit and pieces. I also embossed the surface with some fishing mesh. I collaged the foam board with, Zincit Kill Rust Spray, Car etch Primer filler spray, Car etch gloss spray, tapes, gold star stickers. I also burnt the surface with fire. The surface is inked with pigment and polished, and using a printing press the ink is transferred to paper.

Yeppoon Capricorn Coast Art festival

The 2009 Capricorn Coast Art Festival Emerging Artist Award was won by Jet James for his collography piece 'Midnight'.
It is the second consecutive year in this catorgory Jet has won at Yeppoon's annual art festival . The acquisitive prize was sponsored by Ergon Energy and included $1500 prize money.



Jet was also awarded a highly commended in the Flower and Fauna section for his drypoint etching ' Fleeting Moment', and the winning work was purchased on the opening night by a councillor of the CQ University.

March Exhibition- Mill Gallery

New Exhibitions opening on Saturday, the 7th March, 6pm

There is a lot of local talent in our community adding fun, colour and spice to everyday life. Art lovers will enjoy the diversity of works in the upcoming March exhibition at the Mill Gallery, Yeppoon, staging two separate exhibitions in one venue. The gallery will showcase the works of Jet James titled “Portraits and Nudes” as well as the works of Alice Kay titled “Fish”.

The stunning images created by these two local artists are the result of completely different approaches to art. Jet James is well known for his experimental and spontaneous collographic prints, while Alice Kay favours an analytical approach to her vibrant, graphic images inspired by nature.
“Portraits and Nudes” is an exhibition which captures the essence of the human spirit. “I use a variety of modern materials to assemble an image”, Jet James said. “My work reflects traditional beliefs as well as modern thinking. I use a variety of mediums and application methods in my printmaking. The creative process is purely spontaneous, where images are the result of experimentation. The human form and spirit provides me with an endless source of inspiration.” Jet has won many awards, exhibited regularly and sold work directly and internationally via online marketing.
Alice Kay’s exhibition “Fish” celebrates colour as well as the natural patterns and shapes of Queensland’s diversity of fish.

”My paintings have been inspired by the many forms of life in the marine environment” Alice Kay said. “The amazing range of colour, shape and patterns of fish are the basis for the graphic composition and pattern making in this new body of work. All images are based on real fish and although I have abstracted patterns and elaborated tones and colours, the essential identifying features of each species are retained. The exhibition also includes five mosaic works assembled in partnership with Mike Coates to express the graphic nature of fish in another medium.”

Alice Kay’s background as conservation ecologist has provided her with the desire to celebrate the aesthetic value of our natural environment in her professional art practice.

The exhibitions will be officially opened by the Mayor of the Rockhampton Regional Council, Brad Carter, on Saturday, 7th March at 6pm. It is a great opportunity to meet the artists as well as join other art lovers over some drinks and nibblies.

The exhibition will continue until the 31st of March at the Mill Gallery. The Mill Gallery Artist Collective is a non-profit incorporated body operating a Yeppoon Art Gallery entirely on voluntary basis. The artist coop provides a networking centre for artists from this region and showcases a range of work of local artists on a monthly basis.

The Mill Gallery is in the “Old” Post Office building under the Fig Trees in Normanby Street, Yeppoon.
