This is a paper dry point etching. The technique involves etching into a plate with etching needles , engraving with a rotary tool, scratching the surface with sandpaper and embossing objects into the plate. I then inked the plate and printed it onto cast coated paper.

After the printing, I hand coloured the image with water colour pencils, pigmented pens, and rolled numerous oil based glazes over the entire image.

This is a original mixed media drawing of my home town in Yeppoon. I did the main drawing on location with black Indian Ink and bamboo skewers. After 4 hours and several drawings I went back to my studio and rolled colour glazes over the drawings.

Inspired by nature has been kindly acquired by the Emerald Regional gallery .
This piece held a lot of surprises for me! I was experimenting with wood varnish and spraying this onto the surface of my plate.

Experimentation is a journey into the unknown. A valley riddled with mistakes and hurdles. A place where you are left vulnerable, staring at your own destruction. Yet in all its darkness, everything seems to work out.

Below is a studio picture of me inking up "Inspired by Nature". I'm rubbing offset ink into the collage plate with a credit card. When I have coated the entire plate I polish the excess ink off with rags and telephone paper, leaving a film of ink on the surface and in the textures.

Then I stencil areas of the plate and roll transparent glazes over the image, a process referred to as viscosity printing. After the inking of the plate I print it onto paper with a printing press... creating a limited edition print.

These are some of my new etchings for the year. I've been very happy with some of the results so far, which has me thinking of doing larger versions.
I enjoyed the more linear quality of the prints, and the versatility of the mediums when etching into zinc. I also found the process more user friendly and efficient in comparison to etching into aluminum with ferric chloride or caustic soda.

This is a little about how I created the image,

These artworks are created by etching into zinc with nitric acid. A bitumen ground is applied to the plate which is resistant to the acid. By scratching into the bitumen ground with etching needles and roulettes I expose the bare metal, this is where the lines on my finished product will appear.

The plate is then placed in... a acid bath, to bite into the exposed plate and to create sunken lines. This process was repeated to achieve a variety of lines. The bitumen ground is then cleaned off with solvents.

The plate is inked and polished, leaving the ink in the sunken lines only. I then rolled a thin layer of ink over the entire plate, this technique is known as viscosity printing.
The inked plate is then put through a high-pressure printing press together with a sheet of paper, (often moistened with water) The paper picks up the ink from the etched lines, making a print.

*Other lines were created by utilising acid resistant pens directly onto the metal plate.
I also employed the methods of aqua-tinting and open biting to create tonal effects.

2009 National Youth Self Portrait Prize- Jet James

My entry ' Disposable Self' has been short listed to 32 works and will be included into the National Portrait Gallery online exhibition for the National Youth Self Portrait Prize. The website will be launched on Thursday July 23 and can be viewed at www.portrait.gov.au/site/nyspp.php from that date.

"This year the prize has been highly competitive with over 300 artworks submitted. All entries have been of the highest standard and have displayed an impressive variety of media and techniques. A short list of 15 final works were selected for the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery".

I was unlucky to make it to the final 15. Though its a great surprise to have the image that I entered achieve a shortlisting, Its a very big honour. Wish me luck for next year :)

Australian Printmaker- Dry point etchings- Nature Prints

These are some of my original dry point etchings - nature prints- I've used traditional printmaking techniques to create them. The left image uses À la poupée techniques whilst the image on the right is a relief print. These come in very limited editions of only 5, due to the general wear of the soft plastic plate through the printing press. They can be purchased for $175 per framed piece and discounts are available for bulk orders. A letter of authenticity and a resume indicating my awards will accompany the works. All framed works are packaged to ensure your works arrive in one piece.

I started by drawing my figure into a plastic surface. I them embossed the surface with a variety of foliage. I collaged paint, mesh tape, sand paper, and lacquer to the surface. Because the plastic is soft, ( much like lino) I was able to carve into the plastic as well. I then inked this surface of materials and laid a moist sheet paper on top. A traditional printing press pushes the plate and paper together and creates a limited edition print. As seen above.

The art of collography was invented during the early part of the 20th century. This revolutionary technique involved a rigid surface collaged with materials which is inked with pigment and used to print onto paper or another material using a printing press.

"Free Spirit" : Here I used a foam board and etched into it with screws, toy cars, knifes, paint lids, and other bit and pieces. I also embossed the surface with some fishing mesh. I collaged the foam board with, Zincit Kill Rust Spray, Car etch Primer filler spray, Car etch gloss spray, tapes, gold star stickers. I also burnt the surface with fire. The surface is inked with pigment and polished, and using a printing press the ink is transferred to paper.

Yeppoon Capricorn Coast Art festival

The 2009 Capricorn Coast Art Festival Emerging Artist Award was won by Jet James for his collography piece 'Midnight'.
It is the second consecutive year in this catorgory Jet has won at Yeppoon's annual art festival . The acquisitive prize was sponsored by Ergon Energy and included $1500 prize money.

Jet was also awarded a highly commended in the Flower and Fauna section for his drypoint etching ' Fleeting Moment', and the winning work was purchased on the opening night by a councillor of the CQ University.

March Exhibition- Mill Gallery

New Exhibitions opening on Saturday, the 7th March, 6pm

There is a lot of local talent in our community adding fun, colour and spice to everyday life. Art lovers will enjoy the diversity of works in the upcoming March exhibition at the Mill Gallery, Yeppoon, staging two separate exhibitions in one venue. The gallery will showcase the works of Jet James titled “Portraits and Nudes” as well as the works of Alice Kay titled “Fish”.

The stunning images created by these two local artists are the result of completely different approaches to art. Jet James is well known for his experimental and spontaneous collographic prints, while Alice Kay favours an analytical approach to her vibrant, graphic images inspired by nature.
“Portraits and Nudes” is an exhibition which captures the essence of the human spirit. “I use a variety of modern materials to assemble an image”, Jet James said. “My work reflects traditional beliefs as well as modern thinking. I use a variety of mediums and application methods in my printmaking. The creative process is purely spontaneous, where images are the result of experimentation. The human form and spirit provides me with an endless source of inspiration.” Jet has won many awards, exhibited regularly and sold work directly and internationally via online marketing.
Alice Kay’s exhibition “Fish” celebrates colour as well as the natural patterns and shapes of Queensland’s diversity of fish.

”My paintings have been inspired by the many forms of life in the marine environment” Alice Kay said. “The amazing range of colour, shape and patterns of fish are the basis for the graphic composition and pattern making in this new body of work. All images are based on real fish and although I have abstracted patterns and elaborated tones and colours, the essential identifying features of each species are retained. The exhibition also includes five mosaic works assembled in partnership with Mike Coates to express the graphic nature of fish in another medium.”

Alice Kay’s background as conservation ecologist has provided her with the desire to celebrate the aesthetic value of our natural environment in her professional art practice.

The exhibitions will be officially opened by the Mayor of the Rockhampton Regional Council, Brad Carter, on Saturday, 7th March at 6pm. It is a great opportunity to meet the artists as well as join other art lovers over some drinks and nibblies.

The exhibition will continue until the 31st of March at the Mill Gallery. The Mill Gallery Artist Collective is a non-profit incorporated body operating a Yeppoon Art Gallery entirely on voluntary basis. The artist coop provides a networking centre for artists from this region and showcases a range of work of local artists on a monthly basis.

The Mill Gallery is in the “Old” Post Office building under the Fig Trees in Normanby Street, Yeppoon.

The Rockhampton Art Gallery biennial Ergon Energy Central Queensland Art Awards has become a significant event for Australian artists since 2002, offering opportunities for recognition and purchase in a prestigious competition. The winning works become part of the Rockhampton Art Gallery collection and additional purchases may be made by local sponsors, collectors and the Rockhampton Art Gallery from the finalists’ exhibition. At the opening of the exhibition Jet's artwork also caught the eye of Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor, Brad Carter, and a special unveiling will be made at the Mayors office in the month of Febuary 2009.

The Charles Ware Award for Young Artists is an acquisitive award of $5,000 (perpetually for a work on paper) for artists between 18-26 years.

Artists Win with Tafe Studies

ARTY SUCCESS: Jet Blurton, Yvonne Moloney, Della Stokes and Karen Jones celebrate their recognition at the 2008 Capricorn Coast Rotary Art Festival in May.

FOUR CQ TAFE art students and graduates were recognised at this year’s Capricorn Coast Rotary Art Festival. Karen Jones won first prize in the Print section, Jet Blurton was named Emerging Artist and won a Commended, Yvonne Moloney received a Highly Commended in the Drawing section and Della Stokes received a Commended in the Print section.

Karen and Jet have almost completed their Diplomas in Visual Arts at CQ TAFE. Della and Yvonne have already graduated with their Diplomas.

Karen’s first prize was for her triptych screenprint called Latitude 23, featuring aerial landscapes of Australia – a reef, an estuary and a desert. She has enjoyed her two years at TAFE. “Although I waited until I was in my 40s it’s something I always wanted to do,” she said. “There are some advantages to studying after you have been working for a while because you know what you want to do and you are focused.”

Jet, who runs his own studio Jet James, specialises in printmaking. “The knowledge and skills that I have gained at TAFE I have been able to use in my work. It gives it a sense of professionalism as well as opening up directions in the creative industry,” he said. “I enjoy the atmosphere at TAFE; I love experimenting and learning new things.” Jet is building his name through networking, by entering competitions and generating sales by exhibiting. “It’s just a matter of getting your work out there and having a go.” Jet’s father was an artist, and he attributes his life as a teenager on an isolated cattle station with setting him on the pathway to a life of art.

Yvonne enjoyed the flexibility TAFE offered to complete her Diploma of Visual Arts, with a double major in Printmaking and Painting. “I took a bit longer because I had small children so I stretched it out. I wouldn’t have been able to do it otherwise,” she said. Although Yvonne has finished her assessment, she still comes back to TAFE to access the studio and get advice from teachers. “The teachers are brilliant. They provide great support and push you out of your comfort zone. Without that support you can become a bit stagnant.”

Della also did a double major in Printmaking and Painting. “I loved it … it really brought me out of my shell and gave me confidence because I had none before I started,” she said. “It showed me how to go out and not be afraid of what other people think and to do my own thing.” Della is studying Major Studio Practice at TAFE to give her the skills to set up her own studio. 'Tides of Change' was selected as a finalist for the $5000 Charles Ware Award for Young Artists for works on paper. I am among 11 entries submitted from around Australia.

The artist statement is as follows,

‘Tides of change’ is about mirroring a sense spirituality through the use of experimental printmaking techniques. The spiritual connection for me as the artist is a result of the intuitive, spontaneous and uninhibited manner of working I undertake throughout the creative journey. I hope to invoke this same ‘higher sense’ for the viewer through easy identification with the human form and the images within the piece itself. It is poignant that the spiritual nature of the piece was created through the use of modern materials that reflect the disposable quality of our world.

Inking a collography plate

This is a collograph plate. It is made from hard plastic foam and I have changed the surface of it by both adding materials to it and also taking away some of the surface with a variety of utensils. These different techniques of adding (relief) and cutting away (intaglio) result in lighter and darker areas on the finished product.

Oil based ink (offset inks mixed with gel solvent) is then applied to the surface through rubbing on with plastic cards. I make sure that the entire surface is completely inked and that I can no longer see the image.

My next step is to clear some of the thick ink that is on the surface. When I have deep incisions, I stipple that area to ensure that no large pockets of ink are visible. Then I begin to gently polish the surface with telephone book paper which removes excess ink. When I have completed wiping the surface I should have a thin film of ink on the surface with ink embedded into the textures of the materials.

Above is the printing press that I use for my printing. I lay the inked plate face-up on the bed of the press with a sheet of protective paper underneath. The paper which the image is to be transferred is put on top of the inked plate and then covered by a ‘blanket’ and the whole thing is put through the press. NB The paper which the image is transferred onto is acid-resistant and has been pre-soaked in water for absorbency. Dry paper will stick to the plate and rip.
